First Grade Curriculum

English Language Arts (ELA)


  • Reading: Build foundational skills by decoding words, reading grade-level texts fluently, and understanding story elements (characters, setting, events).

  • Writing: Compose complete sentences, short narratives, and opinion pieces with guidance.

  • Language Development: Expand vocabulary through read-alouds, shared reading, and discussion.

  • Speaking & Listening: Strengthen comprehension and communication through active listening and collaborative conversations.

Mathematics

  • Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Add and subtract within 20 using strategies such as making ten and using a number line.

  • Number & Place Value: Understand numbers up to 120 and recognise patterns in counting.

  • Measurement & Data: Measure lengths, tell time to the hour and half-hour, and represent data in simple charts and graphs.

  • Geometry: Identify, describe, and compose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

Science

  • Life Science: Explore plant and animal habitats and understand how living things meet their needs.

  • Physical Science: Investigate light and sound, including how they travel and change.

  • Earth Science: Observe and describe weather patterns over time.

  • Scientific Practices: Use tools for observation, record data with pictures and words, and ask questions to guide investigations.
